9. Schindler’s List
The Nazi parties industrialisation of the Jewish genocide is one of the most barbaric and inhumane regards for human life, and is forever remembered as the Holocaust. But the one story that stands out as a beacon of humanity during this dark time was that of Schindlers Jews.
Oskar Schindler, (played by Liam Neeson), initially hoped to use World War II as a way to make his fortune. After bribing many Nazi officials, including Amon Göth, (played by Ralph Fiennes), Schindler acquires a factory in order to make munitions and other goods for the Germans while using the Jewish prisoners as his workforce. Itzhak Stern, (played by Ben Kingsley), is hired for his connections with the black market and the Jewish business community, and uses his position to try and have as many Jews deemed as vital to the war effort as possible.
At first, Schindler enjoys his new found wealth and status, but after witnessing the horrors of the concentration camps and the casual way Göth and his soldiers execute Jewish prisoners, he dedicates his efforts towards saving as many lives as he can.
This results in “Schindler’s List”, as he and Stern create a list of 850 Jews to be transferred to his new factory and safe from transportation to Auschwitz.
Schindler’s List should be on your list of films to watch, not just because of the powerful story it tells and the way it tells it, but because it is also regarded as one of the greatest films ever made.
