Despite being attached to the hugely successful Shrek franchise, there weren't too many people out there giddily anticipating the next instalment in the Puss in Boots spin-off series.

In fact, The Last Wish was seen as a project that was destined to bomb due to the way Dreamworks had failed to really drum up much interest for the follow-up, one that arrived a whopping 11 years after its last chapter.

Even the most passionate fans of that first successful but forgettable solo Puss in Boots tale likely had a bad feeling about this animated sequel. However, rather than being a throwaway attempt to earn a quick buck, The Last Wish actually ended up becoming one of the finest animated films of the decade. It boasted a charming, Into the Spider-Verse-esque animation style, some seriously affecting themes and moments, and a number of gripping vocal performances, making it one of the biggest surprises of 2022.

Not only did it stun critics, fans who took a chance on the gorgeous movie raved about it online and lured in many more, with The Last Wish going from seemingly doomed to a nearly half-a billion-dollar-earning-hit by the time its theatrical run was over.
