10 Movies From 2017 That Really Shouldn’t Have Been Boring

2. Kong: Skull Island

Kong: Skull Island never looked like it was going to be more than a fun, over-the-top blockbuster, but it struggled to even clear that low bar, due to a litany of poor visual effects and wooden, one-dimensional characters who largely waste the fantastic likes of Brie Larson, Tom Hiddleston, Samuel L. Jackson and John Goodman.

Things only pick up when John C. Reilly shows up and imbues the story with its only real character and actual interest, because otherwise it's so desperate to be an efficient action film full of trailer-friendly CGI destruction that it forgets to have any real personality.

That a movie about a giant ape throwing helicopters around like they're toys could feel like such a chore is, frankly, embarrassing. Such is the risk of hiring a filmmaker with no blockbuster experience, The Kings of Summer's Jordan Vogt-Roberts, to handle one of the most iconic monsters in movie history.
