10 Movies From 2017 That Really Shouldn’t Have Been Boring

3. The Mountain Between Us

Based on Charles Martin's well-received survival-romance novel and starring the fantastic Kate Winslet and Idris Elba, there was a lot of awards hope for The Mountain Between Us, at least until it actually came out and quickly dashed them entirely.

Winslet and Elba don't really have much in the way of sexual chemistry, the more interesting survival elements frequently take a backseat to the slow-building love story, and the painfully bad epilogue sequence feels like it actually belongs in a Nicholas Sparks adaptation.

Even with its world-class actors, lush locations and cute dog sidekick, this ultimately never graduates beyond feeling like a generic survival weepie, one which incredulously roped in two performers it totally didn't deserve (three if you count that dog).

It's the sort of movie your great aunt will enjoy watching on a Sunday afternoon because she loves Kate Winslet, but if you were hoping for a visceral exploration of the human condition, you sure won't find it here.
