10 Movies Nobody Really Enjoyed Making
9. The Godfather (1972)
Many people will argue that it's the greatest movie ever made, but Francis Ford Coppola's The Godfather was a hellish experience for almost everyone concerned. Producer Al Ruddy once said that "nobody enjoyed one day of it".
Coppola wasn't too well-known and the studio didn't really want him, but they had decided to hire an Italian-American director to give the film more authenticity. Many demands were made of Coppola, who struggled to cope with the pressure. He was given less than two months to film the movie and was asked to change the setting and time period to modern-day Missouri, but refused.
Casting was another issue. Coppola wanted Marlon Brando in the titular role, but the actor was on bad terms with Paramount at the time, causing a lot of tension. Coppola was also the only one who wanted Al Pacino and again had to fight the studio to get his way.
When casting was done, shooting the film was the next issue. Coppola said he expected to be fired at any minute and was constantly being criticised, with Brando even defending him and vowing to quit the film himself if Coppola wasn't a part of it. The director had to fight time and again to add his ideas into the film and bring his vision to life. It's a good job he did.
