10 Movies Nobody Really Enjoyed Making
3. The Star Wars Holiday Special (1978)
Nobody enjoyed making it. Nobody enjoyed watching it. We'd all be better off it had never existed. However, as hard as you might have tried to forget it, the Star Wars Holiday Special really was a thing.
George Lucas, who wasn't really involved in the making of the special, signed off on the idea to help keep people interested in the Star Wars franchise while he worked on the sequels, as the first film had only been out a year.
Lucas may not have made the special, but he did have a big say in how it played out. He wanted it to be based around the Wookiees celebrating their version of Christmas: Life Day. That quickly made things difficult for the writers, who were suddenly tasked with building a lighthearted variety show around characters who couldn't actually talk.
The special went through a couple of directors and various writers, who all did the best they could, but the final result is something of a black mark in Star Wars history. Lucas openly hated the special and regretted agreeing to it in the first place. Harrison Ford has basically wiped the whole thing from his memory and Carrie Fisher said it played a part in her drug addiction.
