10 Movies Nobody Wanted But Ended Up Loving

There probably wasn't a single solitary soul out there clambering for a remake of 2005's Danish action thriller Ambulance, and especially not one directed by Michael Bay of all people.

The original small-scale chase film had a scrappy, rough-around-the-edges quality to it, and basically seemed like the absolute antithesis of a project Bay would be well-suited for.

And yet, while Ambulance unfortunately underperformed at the box office - despite receiving an "A-" CinemaScore from those few who bothered to see it - it went on to receive the strongest reviews of Bay's career, netting him his first Fresh movie on Rotten Tomatoes since 1996's The Rock.

Bay's masterstroke, ultimately, was taking a relatively niche and not particularly great film and injecting it with a mega-dose of steroids.

The result is a dizzying, delirious, relentless action thriller propelled forward by both its visually kinetic, almost never-ending array of set-pieces, and Jake Gyllenhaal's gonzo lead performance.

Ambulance 2022 may not be particularly smart or nuanced, but it is a good deal more self-aware than your typical Bay joint and all the better for it.

Now that the film is available on streaming around the world, don't be surprised if it endures as a cult fave in the years to come. It certainly deserves to.
