11 Movies Nominated For Tons Of Oscars (That Somehow Didn't Win Any)
7. The Shawshank Redemption (0 For 7)
It's hard to believe now, but The Shawshank Redemption the all-time greatest movie according to thousands of IMDB voters was a complete failure at the box office. Even though critics raved about it, audiences didn't have much interest in the movie. Because of that it's actually surprising that Shawshank was even nominated for seven Oscars, though the Oscar shutout itself is no surprise because of that same lack of widespread popularity. Shawshank lost to Forrest Gump in four out of seven categories: Best Picture, Best Actor, Best Adapted Screenplay, and Best Film Editing. However, the biggest crime was Roger Deakins losing the Best Cinematography Oscar. It was Deakins' first of what has since been a total of eleven Oscar nominations for cinematography without a win. While Forrest Gump remains a popular favorite, there's little doubt in hindsight that The Shawshank Redemption and another classic 1994 film, Pulp Fiction, are far better movies. But at least Pulp Fiction got to take home the Oscar for Best Original Screenplay.
