10 Movies Not Screened For Critics (That Were Actually Good)

3. Crawl

Crawl's alligators were scary at some points
Paramount Pictures

Nobody is quite sure why this 2019 thriller was hidden from critics until the last moment. It's a very entertaining movie which Tarantino has said "might be his favorite of the year."

A competitive swimmer (Kaya Scodelario) struggles to keep herself and her injured father (Barry Pepper) safe when alligators invade the family home during a hurricane. It's tense, visceral and gripping. There's just enough background to the characters to make you care what happens to them, helped by great performances from the two leads. The alligators are genuinely terrifying and will remind you that we live on a planet with enough deadly predators that film-makers hardly need to invent their own.

Far from a flop, this is one that people will be watching through their fingers for years to come.
