10 Movies People Initially Thought Were A Joke
8. Sausage Party
Taking its cues from films such as Fritz The Cat and South Park: Bigger Longer And Uncut, Sausage Party is an animated comedy film with masses of dirty, tasteless and offensive jokes thrown in for good measure. However, this didn't stop it from becoming the surprise hit comedy of 2016 with praise from critics and audiences alike.
It's safe to say that nobody expected this film to be good. Similar to the lazy ‘stoner comedies’ that starred Seth Rogan and Jonah Hill before it, people were expecting a shallow premise, annoying characters and immature humor out of this movie. Trailers for the film turned people away as they made it seem like it was just going to be a one note joke played out for an hour and a half. However, once it was released it turned out that Sausage Party was way more intelligent than people initially gave it credit for. Behind the gross comedy and silly stereotypes lies a film full of clever satirical humor as it poked fun at Christianity, abstinence, tension in the Middle East, and meta culture through very inventive metaphors.
As a result, Sausage Party was very successful at the box office. Critics lauded the film calling it “…stupid. But also pretty smart. And funny as hell.” Nobody expected Sausage Party to be as successful as it was, or as smart as it was, and the favorable reviews changed people's minds about the film entirely.
