Some movies have tough subject matter that make them hard to stomach, but others have tough subject matter and come with the added bonus of being based on a true story, making their emotional heft all the more devastating.

Such is the case with Ryan Coogler's searing directorial debut Fruitvale Station, which follows real-life police shooting victim Oscar Grant (a sympathetic Michael B. Jordan) through his last day before his unjust death.

A slice-of-life drama that acts as a sensitive celebration of a life lost far too soon as well as a frank condemnation of a potent social issue, Fruitvale Station tells its story with patience, and allows Michael B. Jordan to give what remains his most powerful performance in the process.

Brutal but beautiful, tense but timely, it's a drama with a clear ending that still hits like a ton of bricks, and is impossible to revisit.

I get to write about what I love, so that's pretty cool. Every great film should seem new every time you see it. Be excellent to each other.
