10 Movies That Aren’t As Bad As Everyone Says
3. The Star Wars Prequels
You've probably already got your mind irrevocably made up about the prequels. George Lucas' trilogy explaining the origins of Darth Vader and the Empire have been relentlessly discussed, dissected and dissed since release and in all that opinions have become increasingly passionate, with haters at their extreme not not only discrediting them in reference to the originals, but strongly assert they don't work as films in their own right.
Now free-speech, opinion and all that, but if you genuinely think that you're flat out wrong. The Star Wars prequels may not quite have the mystique of the first trilogy and there's plenty of shortcomings rooted deep in the creative process, but they're still competently made blockbusters that stand strong alongside their turn-of-the-century contemporaries.
The story, while not quite what everyone wanted, is told with a nice balance of reverence to the future the films are setting up and the smaller issues at hand and the action beats are inventive, never feeling non-Star Wars-y. And from a production design perspective they're beyond impressive, with the galaxy and its various denizens widened vastly in scope.
Complain about minor things like the odd rote line delivery all you want; as examples of filmmaking they work more than fine. We've already looked at some hidden benefits of the Star Wars prequels before, and if you want to delve more into the qualities of Menace, Clones and Sith, head over there to discover more.
