10 Movies That Became Unintentional Sequels
6. Enemy Of The State Is A Sequel To The Conversation
Of all of the films featured here, few work as well as an unintended sequel as Tony Scott's Enemy of the State.
Released in 1998, with Gene Hackman and Will Smith on headline duties, Scott's movie can be viewed as a brilliant, natural follow-up to 1974's Hackman-fronted The Conversation.
Following a very similar plot as The Conversation, Enemy of the State works as the perfect continuation for the '74 film's Harry Caul. Harry was Hackman's character in that slick Francis Ford Coppola thriller, and there is plenty of evidence to back up the notion that The Conversation is actually a sequel.
One major element to point at, is how an old photo of Hackman's Enemy of the State character of Brill Lyle is in fact an archive picture taken directly from The Conversation. Added to that, Brill has the same messy habits as Harry when it comes to his work, and Lyle likewise wears the same style of coat as Caul.
Enemy of the State also throws up some uncertainty about Brill's real identity, suggesting that his name could merely be an assumed one - which further leans into how Brill Lyle could really just be Harry Caul three decades down the line.
