6. Flight
According to reports, Flight only cost about $30 million to make. The result is a film that could stand up to any polished big budget disaster pic. Similar to Argo, Flight is a film for adults that has broad appeal. A critical and commercial success, this film might be the future of filmmaking in a digital age. The bottom line is that movies need to cost less and still deliver quality if studios want to make a profit in this competitive marketplace.
5. The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel
Old is the new black. The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel is proof that we dont have to beaten over the head with endless promotions to show up to see a film. Off of a budget of $10 million, this film quietly racked up over $130 million at the box office. Starring Judi Dench and Maggie Smith, this film again proved that actors of a certain age can still fill theaters. I saw this film twice at sold-out showings. There was some schtick, but overall the movie didnt make fun of seniors. It highlighted the complexities of getting old, while still feeling like you have your life ahead of you. Expect to see more of this trend - low budget, big names and under-served demographics.
