10 Movies That Changed Everything In Ways You Didn't Expect
7. It Popularised The Name "Madison" - Splash
1984's classic fantasy rom-com Splash is a great movie, albeit perhaps not one which anyone expected to have any lasting cultural impact on the world as we know it.
And yet, believe it or not, Splash is single-handedly responsible for the near four-decade popularity of the name Madison - the very same name of Daryl Hannah's mermaid character in the film.
Skeptical? Before 1985, barely any babies were born in the U.S. with the name Madison, yet from 1985 onwards, its use skyrocketed - for girls in particular.
The name's popularity surged in the years that followed until peaking in 2001, when it became the second-most popular girls' name, with more than 22,000 girls being given the name in that year.
Considering the mermaid is named after a street in the movie, and the entire point was that Madison was a ridiculous name few parents would give to their child, it's hilarious that it ended up becoming so phenomenally popular in its own right.
