7. Moulin Rouge Made Panic Room Recast Its Lead
From late 1999 through to mid-2000, Nicole Kidman filmed her iconic, Oscar-nominated performance as Satine in Baz Luhrmann's Moulin Rouge - a physically demanding role which caused her numerous injuries including breaking several ribs, tearing her knee cartilage, and fracturing her knee.
More than six months later, Kidman began work on David Fincher's thriller Panic Room, where she was cast as protagonist Meg Altman.
However, after Kidman had spent two weeks filming, she was injured on set and sent for an X-ray, where it was revealed that her fractured knee sustained during Moulin Rouge had never fully healed.
As a result Kidman was forced to exit the film, what with its highly physical nature, at which point Fincher continued to shoot around her until Jodie Foster was swiftly drafted in as her replacement.
Ironically, though, Foster became pregnant during filming, resulting in later stages of shooting ultimately being suspended until she had given birth.
Given that Kidman nabbed an Oscar nod for her work on Moulin Rouge, she likely doesn't begrudge the injury too much, even if it's a shame we never got to see her tearing it up with Fincher.
