10 Movies That Could Be 2018's Sleeper Hits
2. Skyscraper
'Dwayne Johnson does Die Hard' is probably enough to sell a movie to most audiences, at least on opening weekend. Yet as popular as The Rock is, his career has been dogged by accusations that a lot of his movies aren't very good, which is probably a byproduct of the 45 year-old being one of the hardest-working men in the industry.
On the surface, Skyscraper seems like a throwback to the action flicks of days gone by. One man, trapped in one location, faced with insurmountable odds and a sh*tload of interchangeable henchmen to overcome in order to save the day. So far, so simple.
However, question marks remain over director Rawson Marshall Thurber's ability to handle a project on such a scale, not to mention how generic many of Johnson's blockbuster efforts turn out to be.
With a mid-July release date and Chinese setting, Skyscraper could be a real dark horse in this year's blockbuster race if critics seem to like it. It will likely be a mild hit either way, but a truly great original action movie could be a real shot in the arm to a market that will be saturated in sequels by that point.
