10 Movies That Dedicated Incredible Sequences To Their Actors
4. The Great Escape - Steve McQueen
The Great Escape is a classic war movie packed with iconic and unforgettable moments, but surely none more so than the incredible motorcycle chase sequence, in which Captain Hilts (Steve McQueen) commanders said vehicle and makes a daring attempt to escape the Nazis...before inevitably being recaptured.
The set-piece only exists because of McQueen, who was a motorcycle enthusiast and insisted that his character get to ride one during the movie.
Furthermore, McQueen's aptitude at riding motorcycles allowed him to perform much of the chase himself, even doubling as a German guard at one point because, as legend tells it, only Steve McQueen was capable of keeping up with Steve McQueen.
The unforgettable barbed wire jump was admittedly performed by a stuntman for insurance reasons, but a huge portion of the chase was nevertheless carried out by the actor himself at his own insistence.
McQueen had a reputation throughout his career for insisting upon vehicular chases that placed him in the middle of the action.
In Bullitt he also performed much of his own stunt driving, ensuring to sit as close to the car window as possible (without a seatbelt, no less), to ensure audiences could see it was actually him driving.
