10 Movies That DELIBERATELY Didn't Give Fans What They Wanted

What an absolutely fascinating misfire M. Night Shyamalan's Glass was.

After the director's film Split was a massive return to form that also revealed itself to be a secret sequel to Unbreakable, the stage was set for a third film in which The Horde (James McAvoy), David Dunn (Bruce Willis), and Mr. Glass (Samuel L. Jackson) would collide.

And yet, Glass was far from the epic superhero movie many were expecting, with Shyamalan basically going out of his way to subvert audience desires wherever possible.

For starters, the bulk of the film is set in a psychiatric hospital and has generally limited use of locations throughout, while the hinted-at climax at a new Philadelphia skyscraper is ultimately a red herring that never happens.

Instead, the final battle is a pared-down fight in the most boring and un-cinematic of all locations - a bland, grey car park.

While you can argue that Shyamalan was simply working within budgetary constraints - at $20 million it cost a mere fraction of most superhero movies - the filmmaker made his intent crystal clear with the film's shocking, infuriating ending.

Glass ends with all three main characters dying brutal, unsatisfying deaths, especially our supposed hero David, who gets unceremoniously drowned in a puddle of water by an anonymous soldier.

Evidently Shyamalan was so committed to delivering a subversive superhero movie, free of high-wire set-pieces and a gratifying ending, that he didn't care if it just pissed everybody off.

To his mild credit, Glass' ending effectively ensured there wouldn't be a sequel, and considering that he could've easily milked this IP for another movie or two, that's semi-laudable.

You can't blame fans for being upset that they didn't get what was advertised, though.
