10 Movies That Don't Deserve Their 100% Rotten Tomatoes Rating

3. The Crying Game

Miramax Films

If there's a film which is guaranteed to appear on every top ten list of movies with twists then The Crying Game is it - "the big reveal" has gone down in cinematic history as one of the most outrageous and unexpected of all time. That Neil Jordan's film is also an effective thriller dealing with some complex political issues has only served to enhance its reputation.

Starring Stephen Rea as an IRA member Fergus who kidnaps a British soldier named Jody (played by Forrest Whitaker, who manages to bring a great deal of range to the role despite being shrouded in a hood much of the time), The Crying Game starts out as a commentary on the political struggles in Northern Ireland before shifting gear into something else entirely when Fergus heads to London to lie low. It's here that he makes good on his promise to meet up with Jody's wife, Dil - and it's from this point on that The Crying Game starts to feel increasingly like a Hitchcockian identity piece.

Jordan's competence as both writer and director are apparent from the off, and his ability to switch tracks midway without derailing the narrative mark him as one of Britain's best writer-directors of the time. Yet while The Crying Game is well constructed it is far from a masterpiece deserving of its 100% rating, and the gender-bending twist itself isn't quite as shocking as some suggest - more than a few viewers noticed something odd about a particular character before the reveal, diminishing its impact.
