Mathieu Kassovitz's searing 1995 French drama La Haine revolves around the efforts of three young men trying to survive amid increasing tensions in the Paris suburbs.

The film concludes with Vinz (Vincent Cassel) being accidentally shot dead by a twitchy police officer, with the final shot of the movie showing Vinz's pal Hubert (Hubert Koundé) and the cop pointing their guns at one another. A gunshot then rings out and we cut to black, unaware of who was hit. The end.

The credits subsequently roll silently, quite appropriately allowing the audience to process the film's jaw-dropping bummer of an ending without any other influences. Music would've just felt inappropriate after such a sobering, jolting climax, honestly.
