10 Movies That Gave Just The Right Amount Of Backstory
3. V For Vendetta
Next to Guardians of the Galaxy, V For Vendetta is a more gritty, gruesome film, adapting that of a comic book on the big screen. We’re given a damsel in distress, a brutal government that keeps its people in silence and a permanently masked vigilante.
Some might see V’s lack of identity as dissatisfying, and I’m sure many expected the cliché of a heroic reveal and happy ending. In actuality, we get far from such a thing. We’re shown a dark fiction where a masked man’s only actions against his government are that of terrorism and murder. Looking at the film in isolation, there are so many questions to ponder about V.
We’re given small slithers of answers throughout, some of which even point towards an origin and motivation for his murder list. Regardless, nothing ever goes so far as to overly explain his seemingly harsh nature; holding his partner in fake captivity for months, blowing up historical monuments, murdering members of government.
Some may argue his motives are explained through his monologues. Though, these are all very cleverly written in an attempt to keep the audience in a spin. This is why V For Vendetta makes our list, it's the perfect example of how clever, ambiguous character writing can shroud a character's true intentions.
