At first glance, Back to the future is just a great film. But rewatch it again and you'll find that it is filled to the brim with meta jokes and pop culture references that one will almost certainly miss on a first watch. There are simple jokes that wink at the audience, such as when Marty causing Twin Pines Mall to be renamed called Lone Pine Mall after running over Farmer Peabody's pine tree.

Dig a little deeper and the jokes become more elaborate, such as Huey Lewis composing the awesome theme song and also playing the music judge that ironically tells Marty that he and his band are "just too loud", or that Farmer Peabody's son is named Sherman, thus giving a nice little shout out to the 50s time travelling cartoon duo. There's also the fact that movie is set mainly in 1955, the year of Einstein's death, after whom Doc decided to name his dog.

And then there are those jokes and little details that require a keen eye and way too much spare time. For example, at the beginning of the film at Doc's house, there is a 2-3 second shot of a clock with someone hanging off the minute hand. This not only references Harold Lloyd's famous stunt in 'Safety First' but also foreshadows what happens to Doc at the climax.

My life story is nothing special. I haven't cured ebola, I'm nowhere near stopping terrorism, and I'm still working on that climate change problem. Instead, all I've done so far is put a few hundred words together in an attempt to make people laugh. You can follow me at @Fry_ying_pan but don't be offended if I don't tweet back. It's usually because I've spent too long trying to think up a witty response that the reply window has closed.
