10 Movies That Improved On History By Blatantly Lying

3. Marie Antoinette

Marie Antoinette Expecting authenticity from the Sofia Coppola-directed Marie Antoinette isn't something you're likely to do once you hear contemporary bubble-gum pop music ringing out just moments into the film. That said, Coppola has an instinct for knowing when to fudge the facts, as she transforms a rather bland and even crude real-life romance into something that's a lot more entertaining. The reality of the situation is that Marie's marriage to Louis is tumultuous because of a painful penile condition he has that makes reproduction difficult. However, this decidedly un-cinematic condition is replaced with the notion that Louis is scared of physical congress with a woman, and that's why Marie hasn't yet produced any spawn. In reality, Louis eventually had his condition fixed with surgery, whereas in the film, she ends up seducing him and explaining all the tricks of the trade herself. Given how gross and un-sexy the truth is, we're glad Coppola opted for something a bit more fitting.
