10 Movies That Lied So Much They Told The Truth

7. Me & Earl & The Dying Girl

A Beautiful Mind Russell Crowe
Fox Searchlight

Me and Earl and the Dying Girl is a terrific dramedy revolving around an awkward teenager, Greg Gaines (Thomas Mann), who befriends a classmate, Rachel Kushner (Olivia Cooke), who has been diagnosed with cancer.

Numerous times throughout the film, Greg tells us that Rachel will survive and the movie isn't about dying, but as it turns out, he's lying to us.

In the end, Rachel slips into a coma and dies, at which point Greg apologises to the audience for lying to them, while confessing that deep down he truly didn't think she would die.

While it'd be incredibly easy for such a narrative twist to come off as manipulative or tacky, the dishonest framing actually ends up painting an extremely potent and affecting portrait of denial, that Greg has been unable to come to terms with Rachel's impending death until it finally happens.

That's the sort of personal truth that most "cancer movies" can only ever aspire to reach.
