10 Movies That Made New York City Look Like The Worst Place In The World

2. Requiem For A Dream (2000)

Darren Aronofsky's bleak, crushing case study of substance abuse allows us to see New York City through the eyes of variety of drug-abusers, and witness one of the world's most populous cities as a place of desperate loneliness. New York City can be one of the nastiest places in the world, even to some of the nicest people, meaning that the three drug-addicted friends of Harry, Marion and Tyrone in Requiem For A Dream haven't got a prayer. The gang are forced into unimaginable actions in order to feed their heroin addictions, with New York City towering above and seemingly mocking them, making it harder and harder for them to get high. The city continues to become more unforgiving as the characters grow more desperate by the day, and what Aronofsky leaves you with is a picture of a New York City that drip-feeds drugs to the trio of friends whilst allowing them to rot within the darkness of the streets for longer periods each time. Needless to say, this film won't make you want to take a peek around the NYC backstreets after dark.
