4. An Adulterous Couple Were Changed Into... Siblings In Spain - Mogambo
Cuts don't get much more eyebrow-raisingly ridiculous than this.
John Ford's 1953 romantic adventure film Mogambo involves a love triangle between hunter Victor Marswell (Clark Gable), American socialite Eloise Kelly (Ava Gardner), and Linda Nordley (Grace Kelly), the cheating wife of anthropologist Donald Nordley (Donald Sinden).
Sounds harmless enough, right? Not for Franco-era Spain, apparently, with the conservative Spanish dictatorship insisting that the adultery aspect was objectionable and needed to be altered for the film to be screened in the country.
In an all-timer asleep-at-the-wheel decision, the offending characters of Linda and Donald were changed from a married couple to siblings while dubbing the dialogue into Spanish.
However, given that the obvious romantic implications of their scenes together weren't also removed - namely the fact that they shared a bed - audiences were left to imply an incestuous relationship between the two.
Evidently the authorities were in such a rush to stamp out the faintest whiff of infidelity that they somehow failed to take notice of the massive taboo they'd just dropped into the middle of a supposedly romantic romp. Yikes.
