10 Movies That Prove Pod People Run Hollywood
3. Pirates Of The Caribbean: On Stranger Tides
Johnny Depp’s Oscar-nominated turn as Captain Jack Sparrow in Pirates Of The Caribbean: The Curse Of The Black Pearl generated so much goodwill that people were willing to pay to see the character return in three bloated and repetitive sequels, proving that a modern crowd will sit through anything as long there’s jokes and special effects.
Critics can argue whether On Stranger Tides is better/worse than Dead Man’s Chest and At World’s End, but by now one thing is clear – this particular horse has already been flogged, and now we are picking strips of flesh from its carcase. Producer Joel Silver knows this, so he plays an ironic joke on the viewer and sends the characters after the Fountain Of Youth.
This leads to 2 hours of recycled slapstick, dull action sequences and endless scenes where characters explain their motivation to each other (what is this, Terminator Genisys?) “This isn’t absurdity,” claimed the San Francisco Chronicle. “This is nonsense – and it’s boring as nonsense.”
