8. Ghostbusters
Heres a movie that not only reminds us that imagination can help us to help others using inventions, but conceptually speaking, how many movies do you know where imagination creates a 100-foot Mr. Stay Puft? And how many other movies had the same long-lasting effects on kids? Many of us who grew up with this movie take it for granted, but when you think about it, its really a miracle that this film ended up on the screen at all. The elements of this movie are so creative that we cant help but be stoked, even without Ray Parker Jr.s classic tune. The Ghostbusters create their own fascinating homemade machines each with their own practical purposes. Every ghost is unexpectedly different. And the movie doesnt even really end up being about stereotypical ghosts. Writers Dan Aykroyd and Harold Ramis brought the movie to another level by exploring lesser-known paranormal themes, like the gods of ancient Sumer. You could say Mr. Stay Puft works similarly to movies like Jurassic Park, Solaris, The Cell, or Chloe. Or Petes Dragon. Reminding us that if it werent for imagination, wed have a lot less problems. But its just so amazing to see him there that I dont think it works on the same level. This movie is just a joy to think about. It presents us with so many possibilities, so many inspired yet disparate elements juxtaposed together, and it all works. It has inspired daydreams innumerable, as well as the enthusiastic lunch boxes of generations.
