10 Movies That Ruined Perfect Casts With One Bad Choice
2. The Godfather: Part III – Sofia Coppola
The closing chapter of Francis Ford Coppola’s Godfather trilogy was admittedly something of an anti-climax, especially in comparison to the brilliance of the first two instalments. While by no means an entirely awful film, there is one glaringly obvious fail in The Godfather: Part III and that’s the casting of the director’s daughter Sofia Coppola.
We all know Ms. Coppola as a director herself these days but back in the 80s and 90s she dipped her toes into the acting pool on a few occasions, though her most standout role – and standout for all the wrong reasons – was as Mary Corleone, daughter of Mafioso Michael Corleone.
Dubbed vapid and wooden by the film press, Sofia stuck out like a sore thumb next to acting heavyweights Al Pacino and Diane Keaton and her apparent total lack of acting prowess resulted in the Coppola patriarch accused of nepotism – not surprising really, considering she’d had bit parts in several of his previous films too including The Outsiders, Rumble Fish and two uncredited roles in the first two Godfathers.
Thankfully, she’s since learned she’s better suited behind the camera rather than in front, but the Godfather trilogy will be forever tainted by that terrible performance.
