8. Shaun Of The Dead - Ed Lays Out The Whole Plot

Nightmare Alley

The 2004 rom-zom-com Shaun of the Dead came out at a time when zombie flicks were all the rage. 28 Day Later (2002) had rekindled people's love of the genre. The Resident Evil franchise was well underway, the remake of Dawn of the Dead was wildly successful, so it wasn't long before we got a parody.

Enter Edgar Wright and Simon Pegg. Their film follows dead-beat Shaun, who until the events of the plot, has been unconsciously coasting through life. Early on Shaun gets the boot from his girlfriend for being such a braindead loser. His only solution is to get slaughtered down the pub with his equally dead-beat friend, Ed (Nick Frost).

In a scene which doesn't appear to have much significants to the overall plot, Ed tries to comfort his friend with a plan to get over his ex. He starts with: “We’ll have a Bloody Mary first thing, have a bite at the King’s Head, couple at the Little Princess, stagger back here, and then bang! Back at the bar for shots." This seemingly insignificant line of dialogue, outlines exactly what's about to take place in the film.

The next morning, the two characters kill a zombie named Mary. They witness Shaun's stepdad get bitten in the side of the head. Shaun climbs a tower block to rescue his ex-girlfriend. They all imitate zombies to reach the safety of a bar, and then are saved when the military turns up to shoot the undead hordes.
