There's nothing remotely shocking about a Christopher Nolan movie making mad bank at the box office, but considering the heady, arguably confusing nature of Nolan's Inception (at least to casual audiences), it's still impressive that such a smart, original movie made so much cash.

To the cynical, jaded box office bean-counters, a movie starring DC superheroes just seems like such a safer bet than a cerebral action film, even one helmed by the filmmaker who popularised dark, gritty superhero cinema.

There are very few truly original films that manage to gross even close to $800 million, and when superhero movies are seemingly such safer choices, it's easy to see why. In this instance, though, creativity and technical ingenuity triumphed over generic comic book slop, and that's totally worth celebrating.

Which of these Justice League-destroying movies surprised you the most? Shout them out in the comments!
