10 Movies That Show The Dark And Evil Side Of Social Media

4. Cry_Wolf (2005)

A meandering, jumpy whodunnit from Jeff Wadlow (director of Kick-Ass 2), Cry_Wolf depicts a college campus prank that's given a terrifying lease of life. A gang of students decide to use the internet to create a phony masked murderer, spreading chilling tales about how this killer is brandishing a knife and slashing his way across school campuses. Suddenly, some of the gang begin to meet bloody ends, and it appears that the group's distasteful creation has arisen in real life. What's Dark About It? A shrieking catalogue of wide eyes, gaping mouths, ropes of blood and shrill sounds that make you jolt. And pretty much all of this happens in the dark. Is It Any Good? Nah, not really. Despite an intriguing concept that considers how using the blank face of the internet for gleefully shameless deception can come back around to bite you, Cry_Wolf is happy to settle for being just another routinely acted teen slasher. You know the drill: students are picked off one by one without any kind of explanation, leaving just enough people alive at the end to allow for some sort of twisty revelation about the motive and identity of the killer. Cry_Wolf is a movie that could have been so much more in its dark portrayal of an evil internet creation come to life, but is ultimately a deflating experience as it remains content to rest on its sorely underdeveloped key idea. Mind you, if you're just after twisty teen slasher, by all means give it a go - there are enough red herrings and plot spins in Cry_Wolf to keep you roped in until the end.
