10 Movies That Started As Something Else Entirely

6. The Cloverfield Paradox Was Changed Mid-Production By J.J. Abrams

The internet has been obsessed with the Cloverfield universe ever since the promotion for the first film used clues scattered across websites to create a viral buzz that was quite unlike anything we'd seen before. It was a huge phenomenon, a modern day success story in creating intrigue for an original movie out of no preconceived property and audiences were desperate for more, which they would eventually receive with the rather interesting 10 Cloverfield Lane.

Now spin-offs for the Cloverfield universe were officially a thing, audiences were rabid to see what came next.

During this year's Superbowl, Sony dropped a trailer for the next continuation in the saga titled The Cloverfield Paradox and rather surprisingly, announced the whole film would be available on Netflix to watch straight away after the game.

Though it quickly became evident why Sony had essentially dumped the film quickly on Netflix and didn't give it a theatrical run. It was... problematic.

The issues are easy to identity. The script started out as an original sci-fi movie called God Particle and although the main bulk of the story was largely the same as the final film, it wasn't connected to Cloverfield at all. It was only mid-way through production that J.J. Abrams decided to link it and change the name of the movie - meaning screenwriter Oren Uziel had to quickly rewrite parts of his script to make sense to the Cloverfield universe, ultimately making it the confusing, uneven and unrewarding mess it ended up being.

Which is definitely the reason why very little of The Cloverfield Paradox works and perhaps has killed intrigue in the universe for good.
