10 Movies That Started Shooting Without A Completed Script

4. Jurassic Park III

Men In Black 3 wasn't the first threequel to have script trouble well into principal photography. Jurassic Park III went through several screenwriters and began pre-production in mid 2000 based on a concept about a group of teenagers being trapped on the Jurassic Park island. Only five weeks before shooting was set to begin in August 2000, director Joe Johnston and producer Steven Spielberg threw out the entire script, disregarding the $18 million already spent on creating sets, props, and effects. A brand new script based on a concept created by David Koepp (the same David Koepp who later co-wrote the similarly script-troubled Men In Black 3) was written by Alexander Payne and Jim Taylor, but it wasn't finished in time when shooting began. In addition, likely to save time, the screenwriters incorporated many of the unused ideas for action sequences from the previous Jurassic Park movies into the script. Jurassic Park III received mixed reviews and, while still a moneymaker, made far less than the previous two films. It took over a decade for another Jurassic Park film to go into production - Jurassic World, set to be released this summer.
