10 Movies That Struggled To Define Their Own Rules
3. Everything About Palpatine - Star Wars: The Rise Of Skywalker
Where the hell to even begin with the most recent Star Wars movie? The franchise has certainly been in worse shape before, but never has its plotting and overarching logic felt so utterly slapdash and random, as J.J. Abrams pivoted to cushion the fandom's adversarial response to The Last Jedi.
As amusing as Emperor Palpatine's (Ian McDiarmid) resurrection was in the movie, it only further sought to muddy the nature of death and The Force in the Star Wars universe.
Abrams and co. clearly knew they were playing with fire here, which is likely why the particulars of Palpatine's revival were kept shockingly vague, to say nothing of his wildly inconsistent power set throughout the movie, and the fact that he claims to embody the spirit of every Sith who has ever lived. Right.
This is really just the tip of the iceberg as far as the movie's general inconsistencies and vagaries are concerned, but given Palpatine's status as a beloved legacy villain, giving him such a wishy-washy resurrection here understandably left many fans frustrated.
All the more so as it's likely the last time we'll ever actually see the character in a Star Wars movie. Probably, anyway.
