10 Movies That Suffered Undeserved Fan Backlash
7. Ghostbusters 2016
Before The Last Jedi came along (don't worry, we'll get to that one later) this was the favored punching bag of the worst regions of geek culture. While some of the backlash was tame, such as James Rolfe simply saying that he was not going to see it months before it came out, without laying guilt at anyone who chose to, most of it was - well - the other stuff. Ironically, the calm, nonjudgmental statement was the one that got the most media coverage.
While there were (and certainly are still) defenders of this Paul Feig reinvention of the 80's classic, when the movie came out it was drowned in a sea of sexist whining about their favorite franchise (which only had one good movie and TV show to its name before this, just saying) being "destroyed". But even when the calmer voices prevailed in the conversation, most critics and audiences just weren't gelling with this movie.
Finally, the cherry on top to any movie that gets heavy fanbase backlash: death threats issued towards the cast and crew that chase them off of social media. Because we cannot have nice things.
