10 Movies That Take Themselves Way Too Seriously

2. You People (2023)

Netflix

The premise is enticing, especially when you consider the talent behind it: A Jewish man finally meets the parents of his Black NOI (Nation of Islam) girlfriend, and the cultural differences that separate them lead to some hilarious misunderstandings.

Or at least, they're supposed to. Although the cast, which includes Jonah Hill, Eddie Murphy, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, David Duchovny and Nia Long, are certainly trying, You People is trying so hard to be edgy and relevant that it's actually tough to watch at times.

So desperate to be a timely but warm-hearted assessment of racial differences, prejudice and love against all odds, You People actually feels quite empty, with jokes that are funny because the characters tell us they are, and awkwardness that feels more forced than genuine or attuned to real life.

There's a breezy, fun, much more relaxed comedy in here somewhere, but You People has buried it so deep it can't even briefly claw itself free.
