10 Movies That Totally Ripped Off Die Hard

7. The Raid: Redemption (2011)

Special tactics officer Rama (Iko Uwais) may be very much on-duty when he arrives at the high-rise apartment complex controlled by drug kingpin Tama (Ray Sahetapy), but the Die Hard similarities are still incredibly significant throughout this tenacious Indonesian action classic.

From the single-location premise to the fact that our hero spends much of the movie cut off from assistance and facing a gang of quasi-cartoonish sub-bosses - though none hold a candle to Die Hard's Karl (Alexander Godunov) - the influences are unmistakable and even admitted by writer-director Gareth Evans himself.

The Raid's premise has also been frequently deemed video game-esque, and so it's apt that it almost exactly mirrors the 1996 game Die Hard Trilogy, which loosely adapts the first Die Hard movie into a tower-climbing shoot 'em up.

Though there's an argument to be made that The Raid's action tops Die Hard in terms of intensity and imagination, the characterisation and scripted nuance falls far short of Die Hard's all-rounder brilliance. Such is the trade-off.
