10 Movies That Tricked You Into Believing Heroes Were Evil
2. Gone Girl - Nick Dunne
The entire first half of Gone Girl is focussed on showing what a terrible person Nick Dunne is. His wife goes missing, is seemingly dead and he is the prime suspect.
Nick seems completely apathetic and is shown to be having an affair with a young student he teaches. He's emotionally detached to the situation and doesn't seem all that bothered about the love of his life disappearing under mysterious circumstances.
The film also gives insights into their relationship through his wife's diary entries which detail how he was an abusive husband who used her for sex, and tensions were building to dangerous levels.
As the film unfolds, you find out it was all completely made up and actually his wife has framed him when she discovered he was cheating on her. His wife sets everything up brilliantly to ensure the police suspect him of her murder, and she turns out to be a sociopath.
After this bombshell, the favor of the audience begins to swing towards the misunderstood Nick. He desperately tries to convince those around him of her guilt, but is shot down at every turn.
Nick may be a flawed character who does unquestionably immoral things, but considering who his wife was it's no wonder he wanted out of this hellish relationship and the audience understands his actions much more by the time the credits roll.
He was the only one who could see what his wife was really scheming.
