10 Movies That Tried To Exploit Nostalgia (And Failed)

9. Dumb And Dumber To

One of the most beloved studio comedies of the 1990s, Dumb and Dumber launched the careers of the Farrelly brothers, solidified Jim Carrey as Hollywood's biggest funnyman and became essential viewing to those of a certain demographic. Over the next two decades, the key creatives were constantly asked about a follow-up, partly due to the industry's newfound love for nostalgia and also to erase memories of the horrendous 2003 prequel.

When Dumb and Dumber To finally reached theaters in November 2014, most people were in agreement that catching up with Harry and Lloyd 20 years later was probably a mistake. Gone are the two innocent and lovable idiots from the original, replaced by two spiteful and vulgar middle-aged men spitting out bad jokes and references to the original that only highlight how vastly inferior the sequel is.

The cross-country road trip, Billy the blind kid from 4C, Lloyd daydreaming about killing bad guys, a hitman that rides along with the duo and the second most annoying sound in the world do nothing but highlight how creatively bankrupt Dumb and Dumber To really is, with the vast majority of the original 'comedy' falling painfully flat.

Look, nobody in their right mind would consider Dumb and Dumber high art, but it was a rite-of-passage comedy experience for many people, and the sequel's over-reliance on the nostalgia factor only tarnished the final product.

I don't do social media, so like or follow me in person but please maintain a safe distance or the authorities will be notified. Don't snap me though, I'll probably break. I was once labelled a misogynist on this very site in a twenty paragraph-long rant for daring to speak ill of the Twilight franchise. I stand by what I said, it's crap.
