Truth, justice and the American way. Those are the ideals that we expect Superman to embody, and while the true meaning of the latter is a little blurry these days, you won't find any of the above in Man of Steel.
The Last Son of Krypton has always been a clean-cut hero, full of sunny optimism and altruism - he's the day to Batman's night, not that you'd know it from Zack Snyder's DC Extended Universe launch vehicle.
Right at the foot of the list of things fans were expecting to see in Man of Steel comes snapping a bad guy's neck and levelling half of Metropolis with zero regard for collateral damage, slightly below Supes murdering Lois Lane.
Snyder likes to deconstruct his heroes and this approach is a better fit for some than others. As a archetypal good guy, Superman isn't a great candidate for this treatment, which is part of the reason why the director is being ushered out of Warner Bros' DCEU plans going forward.
