10 Movies That Were Designed To Mess With Your Head

5. Coherence

Mulholland Drive
Ugly Duckling Films

Coherence is a movie best watched while knowing nothing about its plot or subject matter. If you continue to read on from here, Coherence’s mysteries will be revealed, but so too will the reasons why this mind-bending sci-fi thriller is such a unique gem.

The film starts out with guests arriving at a dinner party. Through almost excruciatingly naturalistic mumblecore dialogue, we learn all about their pasts, their personalities, and some of the tensions currently plaguing their relationships. We also learn that a comet is about to pass over the Earth.

As the comet passes, the lights go out, leading two of the party guests to investigate a house down the street that seems to have power. Upon returning, it is revealed that the house is home to exact doppelgangers of everyone at the party, and the guests are caught in a series of branching alternate realities, at least until the comet disappears.

It’s actually fairly easy to follow, thanks to clever use of colours, numbers and random objects the guests use to differentiate themselves from their alternate counterparts. But the entire purpose of the movie is still to mess with your mind, making you question who is sitting across the table from whom, and how you would deal with a group of doubles were they to come knocking on your door.
