10 Movies That Were Far Too Serious For Their Own Good

5. The Happening (2008)

The Happening M. Night Shyamalan missed a trick with The Happening. Upon filming this colossal, unintentionally hilarious travesty, he should have realised that he was actually making an incredibly entertaining B-movie comedy and opted to drain the whole thing of any seriousness. I mean, did he really expect us to watch Mark Wahlberg trying to outrunthe wind without laughing? He did. He actually did. Pair that with all the terrible performances that somehow worked their way into this insanely surreal flick, and... well, you've got this movie, I guess. Once Shyamalan started putting this thing together in the editing room, though, I think he genuinely did have a chance of heart about what "type" of movie he'd made: in the lead up to its release, Shyamalan started saying that he'd made "the best B-movie ever" and that we shouldn't take it seriously. But the movie speaks for itself: of course it's supposed to be serious. Don't get me wrong, The Happening is still entertaining as an unintentional comedy, but it could've been even better if the director had set out to make a unashamed B-movie on purpose.
