10 Movies That Were Far Too Serious For Their Own Good

3. Hancock (2008)

Hancock If you've read me before, you'll know that I have a putrid dislike for the movie Hancock - a flick I felt wasted its concept entirely, and the only movie to have ever put me into a state of walking sadness in the weeks after I was exposed to it. I also never say no to the opportunity to exclaim how much I dislike this movie on a fundamental level, mainly because I'm still angry that Will Smith let me down so badly, but also because Hancock could have been great. A real contender. One of the best meta-superhero comedy motion pictures ever made, perhaps. It's no surprise that this movie was directed by Peter Berg, then, the guy who made a similar "too serious" mistake with Battleship, a blockbuster of misguided efforts that also made this list. Nice job, Pete. But Hancock is ultimately worse than Battleship because it actually had a great idea built into its core that wasn't based on a board game: a superhero who doesn't really want to be a superhero. And yet Berg decided to make this movie into a dull and actually kind of depressing drama. Why? Who wanted that? A tragic tonal nightmare, this one.
