10 Movies That Were Just Trailers For Other Movies

1. The Mummy (2017)

With all the buzz surrounding cinematic universes in Hollywood, Universal decided to raise its own from the dead. Using it's classic monster properties, the studio decides to craft its own blockbuster shared universe with the Dark Universe.

The film that was destined to crack open this 'universe' was Alex Kurtzman's 2017 reboot of The Mummy. Unfortunately, this movie was a total dud. It recycled the exact same plot from pretty much every other Mummy movie ever made, featured some atrocious editing and directing, and made Tom Cruise the least likable he had been in over a decade.

The film quite literally opens with Dr. Jekyll narrating the Mummy story, so it's immediately in over its head. As if the plot wasn't dull enough, the film frequently comes to screeching halts to tease future Dark Universe films. This is most obvious in the use of Prodigium, a secret society that monitors monstrous things, which is introduced in the second act so that the film can spend twenty-some-minutes inside a hall of easter eggs for future sequels and spin-offs.

The film ends with Tom Cruise essentially becoming the Mummy, which is all the studio ever really wanted in the first place.
