10 Movies That Were Shot In Secret

These movies were in the can before anyone knew they existed.

The very nature of filmmaking makes it a pretty public spectacle, with potentially hundreds of cast and crew members coming together to pool their skills and create something.

And so, it's little surprise that most movies aren't made in secret, beyond keeping specific plot details under wraps for the sake of spoilers, of course.

But sometimes filmmakers do indeed go the extra mile to keep their shoot on the down-low until its release approaches, as was most certainly the case with each of these 10 movies.

These films, for whatever reason, were all shot in total secrecy, their existence only confirmed a good while later when their release was actually approaching.

As for why the decision was made to do this?

Perhaps the filmmaker was embarking on a bold experiment which could've fallen flat, maybe they wanted to avoid the pressure of publicly announcing the shoot before filming had begun, or even had to do so for legal reasons, to ensure production wasn't shut down before its completion.

In each case, audiences were totally bamboozled by the very existence of these movies, and in awe of their ability to finish production before the world even knew about them...

10. Predator 6

Though it's absolutely no secret that Prey director Dan Trachtenberg is currently in post-production on a new Predator film, Predator: Badlands, mere weeks ago 20th Century Studios executive Steve Asbell additionally confirmed that Trachtenberg had also shot another Predator film in total secrecy.

More to the point, this secret Predator film will actually release next year before Badlands.

While we know that Badlands will star Elle Fanning as one of two sisters who comes face-to-face with the Predator, we know absolutely nothing about its mysterious predecessor, beyond the fact that Trachtenberg will serve as both writer and director.

Given that it's incredibly difficult for movies from major franchises to be filmed cloak-and-dagger style, it's truly shocking that nothing leaked out about this sequel's existence prior to it being casually announced in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter.

Considering Badlands is due to release on November 7 of next year, though, we're presumably going to find out everything about its secret forebear soon enough.
