10 Movies That Would Have Been Ruined By Happy Endings

2. Se7en

For a man with as impressive a catalog as director David Fincher, 1995's serial killer thriller "Se7en" may still be his most engrossing work. Brad Pitt and Morgan Freeman star as two detectives tasked with bringing down John Doe, an ominous murderer whose kills are all based on the seven deadly sins. The story is highly detailed, filmed in typical stylized Fincher fashion with dreary colors and settings, and both Pitt and Freeman are excellent as detectives David Mills and William Somerset, respectively. Mills' wife (played by Gwyneth Paltrow) confides in Somerset that she is pregnant but has not yet told her husband, as she isn't sure that she wants to keep it. After turning himself in, Doe leads Mills and Somerset to the location of his final two victims, at which point a van arrives delivering a package. The package contains the head of Mills' wife, as Doe reveals that he is guilty of "envy", relishing the detective's normal life, and taunts him with the knowledge that his wife was pregnant, leading to Mills killing him in the name of "wrath", completing Doe's work. This was a brilliant ending to a movie that nearly 20 years later is still the cream of the crop in the serial killer subgenre, and quite ambitious in its execution. It's an amazing movie made all the better for its final moments.
