10 Movies The Critics Were Wrong About

4. Drop Dead Fred

And now for by far the most critically panned film on this list, we have Drop Dead Fred - the wild 1991 black comedy in which the late, great Rik Mayall portrays the ribald imaginary friend of Phoebe Cates' protagonist.

For anyone who saw and loved the movie as a young'un, it was surely a huge shock to see Drop Dead Fred's devastating 11% Tomatometer score.

Indeed, critics of the time hated it, with Gene Siskel even calling it "easily one of the worst films I’ve ever seen."

Reviewers didn't connect with Mayall's madcap comedy routine, nor the film's aggressive slapstick approach and surreal, boundary-pushing approach to exploring mental health issues on film.

It has, however, remained fondly embraced by general audiences, and in recent years - especially following Mayall's untimely passing - there has been a spirited effort by some critics to reclaim it as ahead-of-its-time.

In an era where mental health is discussed far more openly, it's perhaps little surprise that Drop Dead Fred is viewed with considerably less disdain.
