10 Movies They Keep Saying Will Be Made (That Never Will)
8. Dune
The story of director Alejandro Jodorowsky’s adaptation of Dune is well documented in film-nerd circles, but to those who don’t know, the film went through all sorts of pre-production shenanigans before being shut down forever.
Based on the bestselling sci-fi novel of all time of the same name, Jodorowsky’s Dune had a script that would have made for a 14 hour long film, and once the film rights lapsed they were purchased by Dino De Laurentiis, who released a version of Dune directed by David Lynch that was critically panned. Ever since there’s been plans for a reboot.
Considering that Dune is a property that’s notoriously difficult to adapt, it makes sense that we’ve been promised this reboot for so long and yet it’s never been delivered to us. It’s arguably the closest it’s ever been to production now, as director Denis Villeneuve was recently attached to direct, with writer Eric Roth on board to pen the script. So, all seems to be well with Dune. Except, maybe not…
Recently Villeneuve has revealed that he wants to take a break from directing, as he has done five films in the past six years. He’s said that he needs “just a little time to digest,” and that he’ll take that time after Blade Runner 2049 comes out.
Of course, the troubling thing is that Dune has no release date, and Villeneuve says that it’s barely even in pre-production, a fact that should be telling considering how many other versions of Dune have failed before takeoff.
